Everyone is faking it, all of them pretending to be something they’re not. The whole world is built on lies and deceit.

Anne e Marco Conti são um casal rico, pais de uma bebé de seis meses um pouco agitada chamada Cora. Uma noite, vão jantar a casa do casal da porta ao lado de quem são amigos. A babysitter cancela à última hora. Marco quer muito ir a este jantar e convence Anne a, deixar Cora em casa, levando consigo o monitor de bebé, para além de em meia e meia hora irem verificar se a menina está bem.

Who goes to a dinner party next door and leaves her baby alone in the house? What kind of mother does such a thing? She feels the familiar agony set in – she is not a good mother. So what if the sitter canceled? They should have brought Cora with them, put her in her portable playpen. But Cynthia had said no children.

Ao regressarem a casa, a porta da entrada está aberta e Cora não está no berço. A polícia é chamada após uma busca inquieta pela casa por parte dos Conti.

They will be judged, by the police and by everybody else. Serves them right, leaving their baby alone. She would think that, too, if it had happened to someone else. She knows how judgmental mothers are, how good it feels to sit in judgment of someone else.

 Esta é uma leitura fácil, com voltas e reviravoltas constantes e, por isso, o leitor está sempre em constante sobressalto e dúvida. Diria que é uma leitura perfeita para quem está de férias. Contudo, apesar de ser um livro que agarra o leitor desde o início, houve pequenos detalhes que a meu ver falharam e que me impedem de dar cinco estrelas ao mesmo. Esperava um pouco mais. Após ler algumas opiniões, aguardava uma leitura ao estilo Gone Girl e foi aí que me desiludi. 

Ainda assim, não deixo de o recomendar.
